Ballet Yuma announced it will present a fourth, sensory friendly performance as part of its 31st Annual Nutcracker at McBride Auditorium at Snider Hall at Yuma High School from December 12 through 14. In addition to three classic performances, the company will stage an adapted showing intended to make the production more welcoming for children who have sensory sensitivities or other special needs.

Organizers say a private donor underwrote the accessibility changes, and the company has adjusted technical and logistical elements to reduce sensory triggers. Lights will not be fully dimmed, sound levels will be lowered, and some stage effects will be removed. An extra room will be available near the auditorium stocked with sensory friendly toys and a quiet space where children can step out for a moment if they need to.

Ballet Yuma has also partnered with Marine Corps Air Station Yuma through its Exceptional Family Members Program to sponsor 90 children's tickets for families that need assistance. The move is part of an effort to recognize the needs of military families in Yuma County and to broaden access to cultural events for households facing logistical or financial barriers.

The schedule includes evening and matinee performances with a specially designated sensory friendly matinee on Saturday December 13 at 10 30 a m. Ticket prices for most performances will range from 20 dollars to 30 dollars, with the sensory friendly matinee priced at 20 dollars. The company says these measures are intended to remove obstacles that have kept some families from attending holiday traditions.

From a public health and equity perspective, the adaptation highlights how arts organizations can reduce social isolation and support mental health by making events inclusive. For children with sensory processing differences, predictable environments and reduced sensory load can lower stress and enable participation. For the broader community, the initiative models how local institutions can partner with military supports and private donors to expand access.

As Ballet Yuma prepares for the holiday run, the sensory friendly performance aims to ensure that more Yuma County families can share in a long standing cultural tradition while promoting inclusion across the community.
