An investigation is underway after an elderly woman and a middle-aged man, who are related, were found dead inside a Fowler home Wednesday night, along with multiple animals that were also found deceased, authorities said. Officers were dispatched around 6:30 p.m. to a residence near Citrus Avenue and South Avenue after a caller reported that a family member said he “had shot mom, was going to shoot the dogs and shoot myself,” according to Fowler Police Chief Greg Gularte.
The incident was initially dispatched as an assault with a deadly weapon. When officers arrived, they could not make contact with anyone inside, prompting a stand-off with police and Fresno County Sheriff’s deputies as they worked to secure the area and reach the occupants.
After repeated attempts, authorities made entry and found the two adults deceased inside. Their identities have not been released. Police said they used a drone provided by the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office to help safely search the home. To allow the drone to enter, officers breached windows using less-lethal beanbag rounds.
A Cal Fire helicopter that had staged nearby for potential medical transport was released after officials confirmed both victims were deceased. Investigators also documented animals found dead inside the home. Nearby residents were temporarily evacuated out of precaution and later allowed to return once the scene was secured. The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office has assumed the lead in the investigation.
Fowler Police described the incident as isolated and said there is no threat to the surrounding neighborhood. Officials have not confirmed the cause or manner of death for the two family members or the animals. Anyone with information is asked to contact local law enforcement.
