Guilford Schools Open 30 Day Comment Period on Policy Updates

The Guilford County Board of Education Policy Committee voted on November 18, 2025 to send several policy revisions out for a 30 day public input period running from November 18 to December 18, 2025. The proposed changes would codify local practices that align with recent state law changes on library material opt outs, student use of wireless devices during instruction, and parental consent for rooming on overnight field trips, matters that directly affect families and school operations.

On November 18, 2025 the Policy Committee of the Guilford County Board of Education approved sending multiple policy revisions to a formal public comment period that opened the same day and continues through December 18, 2025. The committee action initiates a monthlong opportunity for parents, staff and community members to review full policy language and provide feedback through the district website.

The policy updates include a revision to Policy 3200 Selection of Instructional Materials to align with a state law change that requires board policy permitting parents to opt their children out of checking out specific materials from school library media centers. Guilford County Schools says the revision would codify current district practices, moving those procedures into formal policy to reflect state requirements.

A set of Technology Responsible Use policies, numbered 3225, 4312 and 7329, are also proposed for revision. Those changes are intended to reflect state law requirements that prohibit the use of wireless communication devices during instructional time and to update other technology use provisions. The revisions could affect how classrooms and instructional time are managed, and they are likely to prompt questions about enforcement, exceptions for instructional purposes and access for students who rely on devices for medical or learning needs.

Policy 3320 Field Trips is proposed to be updated to reflect state law changes related to parental consent for student rooming assignments on overnight field trips. That adjustment will affect how the district handles chaperone assignments, housing arrangements on trips and the documentation required from parents before students participate in overnight travel.

For local residents the immediate impact is procedural and regulatory. Codifying library opt out options changes the formal rights available to parents while aligning district practice with new state law. Technology use limits during instruction may change daily classroom routines and could require updated teacher training and communication to families. The field trip revisions may alter planning timelines and consent procedures for schools that organize overnight activities.

The Policy Committee action follows a district news posting that provides links to the full proposed policy language and instructions for submitting input. Community members who wish to comment should review the materials on the Guilford County Schools website and submit feedback before the December 18 closing date. Public participation during the comment period will inform the Board of Education as it considers final approval and implementation of the revised policies.
