Volunteers at the Hult Center staged a one day drive through giving event on Saturday, November 15, collecting nonperishable food, warm clothing, blankets, and new unwrapped toys from community members who stayed in their cars. Collection lanes between Oak and Olive on 6th and 7th Avenues in downtown Eugene and at One Eugene Center on 7th and Willamette allowed residents to donate quickly and safely between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Donations were directed to Food for Lane County, Catholic Community Services of Lane County, and Toys for Tots, organizations that provide food, shelter related services, and gifts for children across the county.

The event model addressed practical barriers to giving by enabling donors to remain in their vehicles, which made participation easier for people with mobility challenges and families with small children. For recipients, the timing could not have been more important. As temperatures drop and demand for food assistance and warm clothing rises, local nonprofits must stretch limited resources to meet basic needs. The donations from the Hult Center drive through provided immediate supplies that will be distributed through existing local channels to households facing food insecurity and families preparing for winter.

Beyond the immediate transfer of goods, the event highlighted broader community and public health implications. Food insecurity is tightly linked with poorer health outcomes, and access to adequate nutrition and warm clothing can reduce risk during cold months for older adults, children, and people with chronic conditions. By supporting Food for Lane County and Catholic Community Services of Lane County, donations help sustain emergency food distribution, shelter operations, and other social services that are part of the local safety net. Contributions to Toys for Tots help alleviate economic stress for families who cannot afford holiday gifts, which has emotional and social importance for children and caregivers.

The drive through also underscored persistent gaps in public funding and the reliance on charitable giving to meet basic needs. While community generosity is vital, advocates say policy changes at the local and state levels are necessary to stabilize food assistance programs, expand affordable housing options, and strengthen income supports so that fewer households must rely on intermittent drives for essential items. Volunteer led events can bridge immediate shortfalls, but they are not a substitute for sustained investment in social services and public health infrastructure.

Organizers offered a small thank you by entering donors in a drawing for tickets to Mrs. Doubtfire at the Hult Center running November 21 through 23. The event provided concrete relief for many households, while also reminding the community that long term solutions will require coordinated policy and funding commitments.
