Island County Celebrates Holiday Parades, Tree Lightings and Gatherings
Communities across Island County filled downtown streets and parks on December 9, 2025 with parades, tree lightings and family events that drew residents and visitors to Langley, Coupeville and Oak Harbor. The gatherings highlighted volunteer engagement, seasonal markets and local performances, offering a boost to small businesses and a moment for civic connection during the holidays.

Town centers on Whidbey Island moved from quiet autumn into holiday bustle on December 9 as coordinated community events drew musicians, costumed characters and vendors. Langley hosted its Holly Jolly Parade with a mix of traditional seasonal figures and unexpected characters including Krampus. Coupeville staged its own parade through its historic waterfront district while Oak Harbor lit its downtown Christmas tree and welcomed a visit from Santa to the square.
Participation came from a range of local groups. Carolers and musical ensembles provided live accompaniment to the processions, community theater performers staged short seasonal offerings, and vendor markets alongside parade routes offered artisan gifts and food. Volunteers helped marshal crowds and manage routes, while town staff coordinated lighting, public safety and street closures. The weekend required extra attention from municipal services and police to manage traffic and ensure pedestrian safety around crowded sidewalks and parking areas.
The events matter to residents beyond seasonal celebration. They concentrated foot traffic in downtown districts, creating economic opportunities for local retailers and food vendors at a time that matters for small business cash flow. They also reinforced civic ties, as residents and longtime volunteers worked alongside municipal staff and business associations to stage logistics and hospitality. For civic leaders, those collaborations underscore how local government and community partners rely on each other to deliver public life that sustains both commerce and social cohesion.
