Kauai County Opens Winter Fun Registration, Limited Spots for Children

Online registration for Kauai County Parks and Recreation Winter Fun Program began on November 14 at 8 a.m., offering holiday day camp for children ages 5 to 11 from December 22 to January 5. The program provides supervised care at four neighborhood sites for a $50 enrollment fee, a resource that matters for working families, but limited capacity and the lack of included meals raise equity and public health concerns.

Kauai County Parks and Recreation opened online registration on November 14 for its Winter Fun Program, a holiday day camp scheduled from December 22 to January 5, Monday through Friday, from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., except on holidays. The program is available to children ages 5 to 11 and is offered at Kekaha, Kalāheo and Līhu‘e neighborhood centers, and at the Anahola Clubhouse. Families were directed to register via the Winter Fun Program website by clicking on Online Registration. Enrollment was limited and handled on a first come, first served basis.

The program costs $50 per child and does not include lunch. Parents and guardians must provide lunch, beverages and snacks for their children each day. For families balancing work and caregiving responsibilities over the holiday period, the program can provide a needed option for supervised, structured activity during the daytime hours. At the same time the absence of provided meals highlights food security and public health implications for children who rely on school meal programs during the regular session.

Limited enrollment that begins through an online portal also raises equity concerns. Households without reliable internet access or flexible hours to register immediately when the portal opened may be disadvantaged. The county has included an accessibility contact for people who need auxiliary aids or other accommodations due to disability. James Kealalio can be reached at 808 241 4467 or by email at jkealalio@kauai.gov. Requests for alternate formats such as large print, Braille or electronic copy were advised to be made as early as possible to allow adequate time to fulfill them.

From a public health perspective, summer and holiday programs like this play a role in child safety and mental wellbeing by providing supervision, activity and social connection. They also intersect with nutrition policy, since children who depend on school meals may face gaps when programs do not include food. Local policy makers and community organizations often weigh these tradeoffs when designing affordable childcare options that support families while addressing basic needs.

For more information about the Winter Fun Program residents were directed to www.kauai.gov/parks or to call 808 241 4467. As the season approaches, county resources will influence how well families can access safe childcare, maintain nutrition, and manage work obligations during the holidays.
