Kauai DMV Offices to Close One Day, Services Resume Thursday
The Kauai Division of Motor Vehicles will close both the main Līhu‘e office and the Kapa‘a Satellite on Wednesday, December 10, for staff training, with normal hours resuming Thursday, December 11. The brief closure affects appointment holders and walk in customers, making advance planning and online appointment verification important for residents.

The Kauai County Division of Motor Vehicles announced a one day closure of both the main Līhu‘e office and the newly opened Kapa‘a Satellite on Wednesday, December 10, to accommodate staff training. Regular operations at both locations will resume on Thursday, December 11.
The Kapa‘a Satellite DMV is currently open to appointment holding customers only, with hours Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., except for state and federally observed holidays. Acceptable transactions at Kapa‘a include motor vehicle transactions, utility payments, bus passes, and tipping coupons. The satellite office does not process driver license transactions at this time, which means customers requiring driver license services must use the Līhu‘e office.
The Līhu‘e DMV accepts both appointment holders and walk in customers, though appointments are highly recommended. Līhu‘e hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., except for observed holidays. Kūpuna hour runs from 8 to 8:45 a.m., with appointment holders and walk ins to follow. Walk ins are accepted until 2 p.m. Līhu‘e processes all motor vehicle and driver license transactions along with other DMV services.
Appointment holders may check in up to 15 minutes before their scheduled time and no later than five minutes after. Customers affected by the December 10 closure should plan ahead, verify appointment times, and use www.kauai.gov/DMV to book or confirm appointments.

The temporary closure highlights a broader tension between necessary staff training and continuity of public services. For many residents, especially kūpuna and those who depend on the Kapa‘a Satellite for limited services, a full day closure can disrupt routine errands and vehicle related deadlines. The absence of driver license services at the Kapa‘a Satellite further concentrates essential transactions at Līhu‘e, which can affect travel time and access for communities on the island’s east side.
County officials indicated the training will allow staff to improve service delivery, and normal operations will resume on Thursday. Plan ahead, confirm appointments online, and allow extra time for tasks that require in person DMV services.
