Key West Man Arrested for Soliciting Teen, Held on One Million Bond
Monroe County deputies arrested 43 year old Derek Queen after an online undercover investigation found he had solicited what he believed was a 14 year old child for sex. The arrest highlights ongoing challenges for law enforcement in policing online predation and raises questions about local resources for youth protection and digital investigations.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office announced on December 8 that deputies took into custody a Key West resident accused of soliciting an underage girl for sex. Investigators say 43 year old Derek Queen contacted an undercover investigator who was posing online as a 14 year old girl, acknowledged the perceived age multiple times, and sent sexually explicit images of himself while proposing sexual activity. Queen was arrested and is being held on a one million dollar bond.
Sheriff’s investigators identified Queen as a member of the outlaw motorcycle gang Pagan and said he has an extensive criminal history. He now faces multiple felony charges including soliciting a minor for prostitution and obscene communication with a minor. Prosecutors will determine formal filing and next steps in the criminal process while the bond remains in place.
The case underscores persistent threats posed by online predation in Monroe County and across Florida. Digital sting operations like the one used by the sheriff’s office are resource intensive, and this arrest draws attention to how local law enforcement allocates investigators and technology to detect and deter crimes against children. The substantial bond amount signals prosecutorial and judicial seriousness, but the presumption of innocence remains a legal safeguard as the case moves through the courts.
For residents of Key West and the wider county the arrest has immediate community implications. Parents and schools may need to reinforce online safety education and monitoring practices for minors, and civic officials may be asked to review funding and training for online investigations. The involvement of a gang affiliated individual adds a layer of concern for patterns of criminal behavior and public safety that elected officials and public safety leaders will need to address.
The case also has potential electoral consequences as voters evaluate public safety performance and priorities for law enforcement funding. Community members can report suspicious online activity to the sheriff’s office and attend local meetings to press for resources that strengthen prevention, investigation, and victim support.
