The Kauai County Department of Public Works and contractor Maui Kupono Builders announced on November 20 that single lane closures will be in effect along Kamalu Road in Kapa‘a from November 21 through November 30. Work is scheduled daily from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. weather permitting, and crews will be conducting road repaving that requires alternating traffic flow through the project zone.

Flaggers will be positioned at the work site to direct traffic through single lane areas. Motorists are asked to slow down in the work zone and to follow directions from flaggers to maintain safety for workers and drivers. The county urged motorists to make appropriate arrangements, use alternate routes where feasible, and allow extra travel time while the work is underway.

The timing of the project coincides with a heavy travel period for residents and visitors, with late November travel patterns typically increasing traffic on island roads. The daytime window aims to concentrate work during hours when crews can make steady progress, but it also means peak morning and midday commutes could see slower travel through Kapa‘a. Local businesses along Kamalu Road and nearby neighborhoods may experience changes in customer access and short term disruptions as repaving equipment and traffic control are in place.

For drivers who rely on Kamalu Road for school drop offs, work commutes, or service deliveries, planning alternate routes and allowing additional travel time will help reduce frustration and prevent unsafe driving behavior near the work zone. Emergency vehicles will retain access, and the presence of traffic control personnel is intended to keep traffic moving as smoothly as possible around active repaving operations.

Residents with questions or seeking more information are encouraged to contact Maui Kupono Builders at 808 369 1800, or Todd Ozaki at 808 241 4845. The county noted that the schedule is subject to change based on weather and site conditions, and further updates will be provided should adjustments to timing or traffic control be required.

The repaving project is part of routine road maintenance aimed at improving pavement quality and long term safety for drivers and pedestrians. While the short term inconveniences of lane closures are inevitable, the planned work is intended to deliver smoother, more durable roadway surfaces for Kapa‘a residents and visitors when the project is completed.
