Local DAV Chapter Seeks Volunteer Drivers to Transport Veterans
On November 24, 2025 the Northwest chapter of Disabled American Veterans of Minnesota began recruiting volunteer drivers to transport ambulatory veterans from the Bemidji area to VA medical appointments in Fargo and other locations. The service is free Monday through Friday based on availability, and it aims to reduce travel barriers for veterans who need regular care.

The Northwest chapter of Disabled American Veterans of Minnesota announced on November 24 that it is seeking volunteer drivers to help ambulatory veterans in the Bemidji area reach VA medical appointments in Fargo and other cities. Transportation is provided free of charge Monday through Friday based on availability, and riders are asked to request rides as early as possible, ideally at least a week in advance.
The service uses non wheel chair accessible vans, so riders must be able to enter and exit vehicles without assistance. Family members or caregivers may ride depending on available space. Organizers emphasized that this arrangement is intended for ambulatory veterans who require reliable ground transportation to scheduled VA care but do not need specialized vehicle access.
For Beltrami County residents the program could ease one of the more persistent challenges for veterans who travel long distances for specialty appointments. Fargo often serves as a regional hub for veterans health care, and transportation gaps can lead to delayed or missed visits. Volunteer drivers from the local community can make those trips more manageable and reduce both financial and logistical burdens on veterans and their families.
The chapter is recruiting both drivers and riders, and community members who are interested in volunteering or arranging transport should contact Dan Wood, Northwest Minnesota Transportation coordinator, for more information and scheduling. The program operates on availability and advance booking improves the chances of securing a ride.
Local nonprofit organizations, veteran service officers and health care providers may find the program a useful resource for patients who need help getting to appointments. As the chapter builds its volunteer pool, coordination between clinics and the DAV could improve appointment adherence and continuity of care for veterans across Beltrami County.
Those seeking to volunteer or to arrange a ride can reach out to the Northwest chapter through the DAV contact listed for the Bemidji area, and ask for Dan Wood, the Northwest Minnesota Transportation coordinator.
