The wrestling season in Valencia County opened with notable results that highlighted depth across local programs and set expectations for the months ahead. Belen scored a commanding win at the Jaguar Invitational, posting 279 points to defeat 18 teams while West Las Vegas finished second with 215.5 points. The Belen boys produced four individual champions, with Mason Carillo at 106 pounds, Manny Valdez at 132 pounds, Jeremy Trujeque at 190 pounds, and Ryder Williamson at 285 pounds. Seven other Eagles finished runner up in their weight classes.

On the girls side at the Lady Jaguars Invitational, Miyamura topped the field with 204 points and Grants followed with 158.5 points while Belen placed third with 121 points. Belen wrestlers Olyvia Sanchez at 115 pounds, Linsey Sanchez at 120 pounds, and Azana Williams at 130 pounds were individual champions in their divisions. The combined performances underscored the program depth at Belen High School and offered early signs of competitiveness across the region.

At the Tom Torres Duals hosted by Los Lunas High School, a strong field included the Tigers who finished sixth at the 2025 5A state championship, Cleveland the 5A state runner up, and regional titlist Atrisco Heritage Academy. Los Lunas went 4-1 through the bracket, securing decisive victories over Atrisco Heritage Academy 49 to 26, Las Cruces 43 to 35, and Sandia 69 to 12 before falling to Cleveland in the championship match. Coach Steve Chavez said he was proud of his guys. “We have a really solid lineup, top to bottom. We have studs all around.”

Beyond trophies and placements, early season tournaments carry practical implications for Valencia County. Strong showings build team confidence and community engagement, and they can increase demand for school athletic resources including access to certified trainers, prompt evaluation for concussions, and equitable support for boys and girls programs. For families and schools, balancing competitive goals with injury prevention and affordable care remains essential. As the season advances, local programs that sustain depth and foster safe training environments will be best positioned to translate early success into championships and lasting opportunities for student athletes.
