Mapleton Knife Threat Leads to Arrest, Hospitalization and Charges

A 29 year old Mapleton man was taken into custody on the morning of November 19 after reportedly pointing a large knife at people and advancing toward bystanders in the business district along Highway 126, according to the Lane County Sheriff s Office. Deputies were dispatched around 7 30 a.m. after multiple reports, and two individuals held the man at gunpoint until law enforcement arrived. Another bystander used bear spray before deputies reached the scene, after which the suspect dropped the knife and removed his clothing.

The sheriff s office identified the suspect as Thomas Lynn Jessop. Deputies said he cooperated at first when they made contact, then his behavior escalated. Medics sedated him and transported him to a hospital for evaluation and treatment. Jessop was later booked into the Lane County Jail on three counts of menacing, unlawful use of a weapon and disorderly conduct.
