The San Luis Police Department will deploy an expanded traffic enforcement detail over Halloween weekend, October 30 through November 1, in an effort to reduce collisions and injuries across the city. The enforcement is part of a STEP traffic and DUI detail supported by funding from the Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, and will be focused throughout San Luis.

The detail targets seatbelt violations, impaired driving, speeding, distracted driving and pedestrian safety, officials said in a public release. Officers will be visible at multiple locations and conducting stops aimed at behaviors that research and crash data identify as leading contributors to serious injury and death on local roads. The city release asked motorists to buckle up, designate sober drivers, and report suspected DUI or reckless driving.

Residents are asked to report incidents and concerns by calling designated numbers. For non emergency calls the department provided (928) 341 2420. In emergencies callers should dial 911. The department also provided an anonymous tip line listed as 78 CRIME.

The enforcement push arrives at one of the busiest times for traffic and community activity in San Luis, when trick or treating, private gatherings and travel between households increase pedestrian and vehicle interactions. Local public safety officials say stepped up enforcement during these periods can deter risky driving and improve safety for both drivers and pedestrians.

Funding through the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety is intended to support targeted traffic safety operations statewide, and San Luis is using that grant to concentrate local resources on a short term, high visibility effort. The city release emphasizes that the enforcement is not limited to DUI patrol alone, but includes a comprehensive approach to traffic safety that addresses multiple risk behaviors that contribute to crashes.

For community members the immediate impact may include increased traffic stops and checkpoints in the short term, and a higher law enforcement presence in neighborhoods and commercial corridors. Long term goals are a reduction in preventable collisions and injuries, and heightened awareness among drivers about seatbelt use and sober driving.

The department encourages residents to take personal precautions during the holiday weekend by using seatbelts, planning sober transportation, and reporting unsafe driving when observed. The outreach aims to combine enforcement with community engagement to reduce harm and improve roadway safety for all San Luis residents.
