Shiprock Teams Dominate Opening Day, Advance in Chieftain Invitational
Shiprock High boys and girls both posted decisive wins Thursday night to advance to the championship bracket of the Chieftain Invitational at the Chieftain Pit, setting up Friday second round matchups that will keep local fans engaged. The lopsided scores underscore early season form for the Chieftains and highlight competitive gaps among regional programs that matter to player development and community support.
Shiprock High opened the season with commanding performances in the opening round of the Lady and Chieftain Invitational Tournament at the Chieftain Pit on Thursday night. The Shiprock girls routed Thoreau 63 to 30, improving to 2 and 0 for the season, while the Shiprock boys overwhelmed Monument Valley of Utah by a final of 85 to 29. Both teams advanced to the second round of the championship bracket.
The girls will face Pine Hill at 5 30 p.m. on Friday after the Warriors earned their berth with a 59 to 22 win over Shiprock Northwest. In the boys bracket the Chieftains are scheduled to tangle with Dulce at 7 p.m. on Friday, following Dulce s 79 to 11 victory over Tse Yi Gai. The tournament field also saw Bloomfield post a 44 to 19 win over Hozho Academy during opening play, and box score results highlighted several standout performances and momentum shifts across the schedule.
Thursday s results reinforced Shiprock s strengths on both ends of the court. The girls outing featured a sustained offensive balance and defensive pressure that limited Thoreau s scoring opportunities. The boys game was notable for an early run that set the tone and for consistent scoring that pushed the margin well beyond the midway point of the contest. Recaps emphasized scoring leaders, key runs and defensive stands, while coaches and staff have identified execution and areas for improvement as the teams prepare for Friday s games.

For local residents the outcomes matter beyond wins and losses. Home court success draws crowds to the Chieftain Pit, supports band and booster fundraising, and provides competitive exposure for student athletes in early non conference play. Travel by opponents from across the region including Monument Valley of Utah also brings attention to the county s role in southwestern high school athletics.
Friday s second round matchups will determine which teams remain in contention for the tournament championship and will offer another opportunity to evaluate player development and coaching adjustments as the season progresses. Fans and families should expect increased attendance and spirited competition at Shiprock High over the weekend.
