Statewide Mississippi Theatre Festival Set for University of Mississippi Campus
The Mississippi Theatre Association will hold its annual statewide theatre festival January 15–18, 2026, on the University of Mississippi campus, bringing high school students, community theatre groups, educators, and theatre professionals to Lafayette County. The four-day event is the largest theatre festival in the state and will include adjudicated competitions that can advance participants to the Southeastern Theatre Conference in March, alongside youth programming, workshops, and public performances that offer cultural and economic benefits to the community.

The Mississippi Theatre Association will stage its largest statewide festival at the University of Mississippi January 15–18, drawing schools, community companies, teachers, and theatre professionals from across Mississippi. The multi-day program features adjudicated performances in which participating groups compete for opportunities to advance to the Southeastern Theatre Conference in March, as well as Individual Events, a 10-Minute Play Festival, Theatre for Youth performances, and professional-led workshops aimed at education and skills development.
For Lafayette County, the festival represents both a cultural showcase and a logistical event. The influx of visiting students, chaperones, educators, and audiences is likely to increase demand for local hotels, restaurants, and other services surrounding the Oxford campus. The university’s role as host elevates its profile as a regional cultural hub and creates opportunities for local schools and community theatres to gain wider exposure and competitive experience.
The adjudicated component matters to schools and community groups beyond artistic recognition. Advancement to the Southeastern Theatre Conference in March can mean additional travel, scheduling and budgetary considerations for programs that qualify. Local administrators and arts educators will need to plan accordingly if groups earn spots at SETC, balancing educational benefits with financial and logistical realities.

Organizing an event of this scale will also require coordination among university staff, city and county public safety and transportation officials, and festival organizers to manage venue scheduling, parking, crowd flow, and accessibility. Workshops and youth performances emphasize the festival’s educational mission and the potential for increased civic engagement among students who gain hands-on experience in production, acting and stagecraft.
The public is invited to attend. Weekend and single-day passes will be available, and full schedules and ticket information can be found at mississippitheatre.org. For Lafayette County residents, the festival offers a rare concentration of statewide arts activity close to home, combined with practical considerations for local services and school programs should participating groups advance to regional competition.
