Hawaiian Dredging Construction Company Inc., contracted by the Department of Water, began utility and excavation work on December 1 along a stretch of Kawaihau Road running from the intersection at Kaapuni Road to Kapahi Road. The project will run through December 31, and weekday one lane closures will be in effect from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Parking will not be allowed in designated work zones during those hours.

The work is part of the Kapaʻa Homesteads Tank Project, which will add two 0.5 million gallon storage tanks and storm drain improvements to the local system. Crews will also install approximately 1,700 linear feet of new water lines, including 16 inch and 12 inch pipes, along with related appurtenances. The upgrades are intended to increase storage capacity and modernize distribution for the Kapaʻa Homesteads area.

Motorists should expect delays and are advised to allow extra travel time when using this section of Kawaihau Road. Access to properties along the work zone will be maintained, and drivers must obey posted signs, traffic controls, and flaggers. Drivers are asked to use caution when crossing temporary roadway steel plates that will be in place at times. All work will take place on weekdays only, and the schedule is weather permitting and subject to change.

Local emergency services, school transportation and businesses that rely on timely deliveries may encounter short delays during the stated work hours. Residents who park near the work zone should move vehicles to avoid citations or towing, since parking is prohibited in the designated areas during construction. The Department of Water and Hawaiian Dredging emphasize efforts to minimize disruption and complete the work efficiently.
