Athearn Genesis FP45 in HO Delivers Strong Detail and Performance
Athearn released a new run of its Genesis line EMD FP45 in HO late in December 2025, and hands on examination found a model that balances accurate appearance with reliable running. The locomotive captures key prototype features for the 14 FP45s built in 1967 and 1968 for ATSF and Milwaukee Road, while offering solid slow speed control and a level of detail that will matter to collectors and operators.

Athearn’s latest Genesis line EMD FP45 arrived with features that address both display fidelity and day to day layout work. The prototype is a small and distinctive group, with 14 FP45s built in 1967 and 1968 for ATSF and Milwaukee Road, and the model reflects road specific differences that many collectors prize. Milwaukee Road examples include a winterization hatch, plated over cab lights on certain numbers, and a Stratolite beacon among the extra fittings that set them apart.
The model uses an injection molded plastic body combined with die cast components for heft and stability. Numerous freestanding detail parts enhance the appearance, including wire grab irons and etched metal radiator grills. McHenry body mounted couplers are fitted, and the cab interior is detailed. Directional LED lighting and porthole glazing improve realism in both daylight and operating conditions. Close up photos and a running video show how these elements look on the layout and confirm the lighting and glazing choices.
Performance testing showed good slow speed control and drawbar pull sufficient for typical consists, making this FP45 a practical choice for both yard and road service on most home layouts. Paint and printing were praised for crispness and color matching, though a few small accuracy notes appeared on the test sample. One unit was missing an F on the sill, and another sample had a slightly undersized plate over the cab lights. These are cosmetic issues that are visible in close inspection and can be corrected by modelers who want perfect fidelity.

If you are considering this model, inspect for the minor accuracy items and decide whether you want the Milwaukee Road specific fittings for your roster. The combination of detailed road specific parts, solid running behavior, and strong finish makes this Athearn FP45 a useful addition for layouts depicting late 1960s and later service. Photographs and a running clip accompany this hands on look and help show what to expect on the layout.
