Baker City fare-free bus expands schedule with new funding
Community Connections of Baker County updated the Baker City bus schedule, which went into effect January 5, enhancing local, fare-free transit for work, shopping and appointments. The change, enabled by new public transit funding, aims to reduce transportation barriers that affect access to health care, jobs and daily needs for Baker County residents.

Community Connections of Baker County announced an updated schedule for the Baker City bus route that began January 5, expanding regular service hours and reaffirming that the route remains fare-free. The agency said the change was possible because of new public transit funding and is intended to improve reliable local mobility for residents who rely on public transit for essential trips.
The Baker City bus operates as a deviated fixed-route service and runs Monday through Friday from 7:45 a.m. to 5:15 p.m., with buses departing about every 45 minutes and a midday break between 12:00 and 1:00 p.m. Saturday service runs from 8:30 a.m. to 5:15 p.m., also pausing for lunch from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. Community Connections explained that the deviated fixed route follows a regular schedule but allows approved deviations to pick up or drop off riders near their destination when requested.
"The Baker City bus is a fare-free deviated fixed-route service that travels throughout town to help you get to work, shopping, appointments, school, or wherever you need to go around town — all without paying a fare!" Community Connections wrote in its announcement. Riders who need a deviation are asked to call at least one business day in advance at (541) 523-7433 to arrange pickup or drop-off near their destination.
For Baker County residents, expanded and fare-free transit has practical implications for health and equity. Many families, older adults and people with low incomes depend on public transportation to reach medical appointments, pharmacies and grocery stores. Reliable daytime service can reduce missed medical visits, improve medication adherence and ease the financial strain of paying for rides. The deviated route option also helps residents with mobility limitations access services more directly when door-to-door paratransit is not available.

At the same time, the schedule highlights continuing gaps. Service ends in the early evening and does not include late-night or Sunday runs, which may leave shift workers and others with nonstandard hours without reliable transit. The midday lunch break may require residents to plan appointments around a one-hour window when buses do not operate. Community Connections recommends riders plan trips with those limitations in mind and use the deviation phone line to request accommodations.
By keeping the route fare-free and expanding hours within available resources, the county is taking a step toward reducing transportation barriers that affect public health and economic opportunity. Residents can call (541) 523-7433 to schedule deviations or for more information about the updated route and times.
