Coal Mountain Recycling Center reopens after repairs, restores services
Coal Mountain Recycling Center has reopened after repairs, restoring local recycling and disposal services for Forsyth residents. Note hours, fees, and restrictions before visiting.

The Coal Mountain Recycling Center at 3560 Settingdown Road has officially reopened following recent repairs and improvements, restoring a key neighborhood convenience for Forsyth County residents. The facility is part of the county’s network of three public recycling and solid waste convenience centers operated by the Forsyth County Recycling and Solid Waste Department.
The center accepts residential household trash and most recyclable materials. Center hours are Monday through Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.; the centers are closed on Sundays and county holidays. The convenience centers are for Forsyth County residents only and do not accept commercial or business waste.

Most recycling is free, but there are specific fees for certain items. Electronics, paint, and tires carry charges. Residential household trash disposal is priced at $0.50 per bag for customers who also bring recycling, and $1.00 per bag for customers who do not bring recycling. Customers are limited to five bags per day, and the maximum bag size accepted is 32 gallons. The centers accept cash only.
The reopening restores a local drop-off option that many residents rely on for routine disposal and recycling needs. For households that had been diverting recyclables or holding onto excess trash, the restored service means fewer trips out of county and clearer options for handling items that are not accepted in curbside pickup programs. The cash-only policy and per-bag fees make it important for residents to plan ahead to avoid surprises at the gate.
Forsyth County also schedules periodic Household Hazardous Waste Recycling & Disposal Events for items that require special handling. The next event will be held Saturday, May 2, 2026, and pre-registration is required to participate. Residents should plan for that event if they need to dispose of hazardous materials such as automotive fluids, certain cleaners, or large quantities of leftover paint.
Reopening the Coal Mountain site restores capacity across the county’s convenience center network and reinforces the county’s focus on keeping residential waste out of commercial streams. For routine recycling and trash needs, residents should confirm hours and bring the correct payment in cash.
The takeaway? Bring your recyclables when you visit to cut the per-bag fee, keep bags to 32 gallons or smaller, and remember the five-bag daily limit. Our two cents? Make a short checklist before you go, bring cash, and save the household hazardous items for the May 2 event with preregistration.
