Downwind a Palooza Draws 65 Riders, Highlights Keys Water Safety

On November 29 the Florida Keys hosted the inaugural Downwind a Palooza, a long distance downwind kiteboarding endurance event that drew more than 65 competitors into challenging open ocean conditions. Riders launched at Grassy Flats Resort and completed the course at Geiger Key after organizers shortened the original finish planned for Smathers Beach for safety reasons. Participants competed in Pro and Not So Pro divisions and contested 5 kilometer and 10 kilometer courses, with overall and masters results recorded across both distances.

Event organizers coordinated closely with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the United States Coast Guard and local law enforcement to manage safety on the water and along shorelines. That coordination proved central as extreme winds and rough seas created rescue and recovery risks and required route adjustments during the run.
