Forsyth County Issues Winter Storm Preparations as Snow and Ice Loom
Forsyth County officials posted a series of updates on Jan. 8 warning residents to prepare for a winter storm expected to begin Friday, Jan. 10, with snow, sleet and freezing rain that could make travel hazardous and threaten power and water systems. The county is offering practical guidance on protecting pipes, pets and vehicles, and will maintain running updates on closures, road conditions and emergency operations through Jan. 9–11.

Forsyth County officials are urging residents to take immediate steps to prepare for a winter storm forecast to arrive Friday, Jan. 10, that could bring more than two inches of snow and up to 0.25 inches of ice. A National Weather Service briefing prompted county advisories this morning and officials say freezing temperatures are expected through the weekend, increasing the risk of hazardous travel conditions, power outages and frozen pipes.
County updates posted Jan. 8 include a 3:00 p.m. video briefing from the county manager and the Emergency Management Agency director outlining the forecast window and potential impacts. The National Weather Service advisory noted precipitation could begin between 4–10 a.m. on Friday and warned that bridges and overpasses may become icy even if ambient temperatures remain above freezing. Officials are maintaining a running set of updates that will continue through Jan. 9–11 covering Emergency Operations Center activation, library and county office closures, road-closure interactive maps, generator safety and guidance to reserve 911 for true emergencies.
Practical preparations recommended by the county focus on water systems, heating and travel. Homeowners are advised to disconnect and drain outdoor hoses, shut off irrigation water, keep faucets dripping, open cabinet doors to allow warm air circulation around pipes in kitchens and bathrooms, and insulate pipes in unheated areas. Residents should locate and learn how to use their home’s water shut-off valve to limit damage if pipes freeze and burst.
The county also posted tips to protect vulnerable residents and property, asking neighbors to check on elderly relatives and friends, provide warm shelter for pets, and protect outdoor plants. Drivers are urged to keep an emergency kit in vehicles that includes water, non-perishable snacks, a phone charger, ice scraper, blanket, sand and jumper cables.

Forsyth County will update road conditions and closures as the storm approaches; officials stress avoiding nonessential travel during periods of freezing rain and heavy snow. Guidance on safe generator use is part of the ongoing advisories to reduce the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning during power outages. Residents should reserve 911 for life-threatening emergencies and use nonemergency county contact channels for weather-related questions and status checks.
With temperatures expected to fall and hazardous conditions likely, the county’s message is clear: take preventive measures now to protect property, health and safety, and monitor county updates through Jan. 9–11 for developments.
