Goochland Opens Applications for 2026 Veterans Banner Program
Goochland County announced applications are open for the 2026 Veterans Military Tribute Banner Program, continuing a community initiative that honored 63 local veterans and service members in its inaugural year. The program provides free, full color banners displayed along River Road West and Sandy Hook Road from Memorial Day through Veterans Day, and applications will be accepted through March 1, 2026.

Goochland County announced on December 9, 2025 that it has opened applications for the 2026 Veterans Military Tribute Banner Program. The county said the program, free to veterans families, will again offer families the chance to honor local service members with full color banners to be displayed on county roads during the traditional Memorial Day through Veterans Day period.
In its first year the program recognized 63 local veterans and service members with banners installed along River Road West and Sandy Hook Road. Those banners have since been removed and are available for pick up by sponsoring families at the Department of General Services. The county set a March 1, 2026 deadline for applications, and asked that families not resubmit an honoree who has already been recognized until after that deadline because space is limited.
The continuation of the banner program reinforces a visible, civic form of recognition that places veterans in prominent public view during key commemorative months. For residents this means increased local visibility for families of veterans, and a recurring community reminder of military service that can shape public memory and civic rituals. Because the program uses county-controlled roadways and public space, it also raises practical questions about selection processes, rotation and display logistics, and how limited space is allocated among requests. The county request that families avoid duplicate submissions until after the March 1 deadline is a procedural step to manage demand and preserve fair access.
Practically, families who wish to submit an honoree can find application details and the submission portal at militarytributebanners.org. The county has emphasized that the program is free to families, which lowers barriers to participation, but the request regarding resubmission underscores that demand may exceed available locations. Residents seeking to honor a veteran should act before the March 1 deadline and plan to retrieve banners from the Department of General Services once they are removed from display. The program represents a local collaboration between civic institutions and families to maintain public recognition of military service while navigating limited public space and administrative capacity.
