Local Gas Sales Return Millions to Goochland Transportation Projects
Goochland County has received a total of $9.2 million since 2020 from locally generated gasoline taxes administered through the Central Virginia Transportation Authority, funds that are increasing each year. Those dollars are paying for roundabouts, signal upgrades, interchange improvements, and studies that affect traffic safety and emergency response across the county.

The General Assembly created the Central Virginia Transportation Authority in 2020 to manage transportation funding collected locally. Under the authority, fifty percent of taxes collected through gasoline purchases are returned to participating localities for projects chosen at the county or regional level. Goochland County has realized a total of nine point two million dollars from that program since 2020, with the amount increasing each year.
Portions of the county share have already been allocated to a range of projects intended to improve safety, reduce congestion, and speed emergency response times. Key investments include the Fairgrounds Road roundabout and the Fairground Road extension project. County plans also use funds for emergency vehicle preemption at all traffic signals in Goochland, improvements to the median at Fire Rescue Company 1, and Interstate 64 interchange improvements near Oilville. The county has also directed money toward numerous studies and technical assistance to prepare future projects.
For local residents the funding has practical consequences. Improved signal timing and emergency vehicle preemption can shave precious minutes from response times for ambulances and fire apparatus. Intersection and interchange work aims to reduce delays for daily commuters and commercial traffic, while planned studies will identify long term priorities for safety and growth management. Because half of the gasoline tax revenue stays local, where people choose to purchase fuel influences which projects receive support.

County officials say the stream of funds has grown each year, giving planners more capacity to advance construction and design work. Motorists who want to support local projects are encouraged to patronize Goochland gas stations, since that spending returns directly to the county through the regional authority.
