Mother and Husband Charged in Pregnant Woman's Fatal Abduction

Wexford County prosecutors filed murder and torture charges on December 2 against Cortney Bartholomew, 40, and Brad Bartholomew, 47, in the death of Rebecca Park. Park, 22, who was in the final days of pregnancy when she was last seen on November 3, was found dead in a wooded area roughly three weeks after she disappeared. Prosecutor Johanna Carey said the baby had been cut out of her when her remains were discovered.

Courtroom testimony described a brutal sequence of events that prosecutors said began when Mr. Bartholomew brought Rebecca to the Bartholomew home, forced her into another vehicle, and drove her into the woods. Carey said, “Mr. Bartholomew brought Rebecca to their home, forced her into another vehicle and took her into the woods where they stabbed her, forced her to lie on the ground while they cut her baby out, ultimately caused her death and the death of the baby." In court Carey called the crime, “This is, frankly, evil personified."

The Bartholomews appeared by video from county jail and were denied bond. A public defender for the couple declined to comment. Prosecutors have not disclosed a motive, and investigators described the probe as active with more details expected as the case moves forward.

Dozens of people who had searched for Park filled the courtroom. Cortney Bartholomew is Park's biological mother. Park was raised by a couple who adopted her and her siblings, a fact that has deepened the community's shock.
