Pawling Man Arrested, Charged in Danbury Taxi Driver Death

Putnam County law enforcement announced the arrest of Santos Vasquez Ramirez, 28, of Pawling, N.Y., on Dec. 13, 2025, in connection with the disappearance and death of taxi driver Elias "Aurelio" Zhunio Orbez, 66, of Danbury, Conn. Ramirez was charged with second degree murder and first degree robbery after investigators said surveillance footage and forensic evidence identified him as a suspect.

Zhunio Orbez was reported missing on Dec. 1, 2025, after last being seen picking up a customer at the Brewster Metro North station. His taxi was later found abandoned. Fishermen discovered his body floating in the Croton Falls Reservoir on Dec. 7, 2025. The discovery prompted a homicide investigation that spanned multiple agencies and review of extensive evidence.

Sheriff Brian Hess said investigators reviewed extensive video surveillance and forensic evidence, including blood and DNA recovered and submitted for testing, which led to Ramirez's identification and arrest.
