Sheriff’s Office Urges Humboldt Residents To Guard Against Mail Theft
The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office issued a reminder on December 10 urging residents to take proactive steps against mail and package theft as holiday deliveries increase. The guidance outlines practical measures for pickup, delivery management, and secure storage, and provides phone numbers for reporting theft in unincorporated areas.

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office reminded residents on December 10 to protect themselves from mail and package theft as the holiday season brings more deliveries to homes across the county. The advisory emphasized prompt action and straightforward precautions to reduce the chance that letters or parcels are stolen from porches and mailboxes.
Officials recommended that residents pick up mail promptly and arrange alternate pickup when they will be away. The advisory encouraged people to customize delivery instructions using carrier tracking tools, to use USPS Hold for Pickup or Intercept options, and to request a USPS Mail Hold when traveling. Neighbors can be enlisted to retrieve items when homeowners are absent. Residents were specifically advised to avoid sending cash through the mail and to follow up quickly on any missing items.
The sheriff’s office also outlined physical security measures. Installing secure and locking mailboxes or using post office boxes can limit opportunistic theft. Home security cameras aimed at delivery areas provide additional deterrence and evidence in the event of a theft. These steps address particular vulnerabilities in Humboldt County where rural routes, long driveways, and limited street lighting can make residential deliveries more exposed.

For unincorporated Humboldt County, theft and other crimes can be reported to the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office at (707) 445-7251. The Crime Tip line is available at (707) 268-2539. Residents who discover missing mail should contact their carrier as well as local law enforcement promptly to increase the likelihood of recovery and to assist investigations.
The guidance reflects common challenges faced by communities during peak shopping periods when package volumes surge. For Humboldt County residents, taking simple measures now can reduce losses and preserve community safety during a time of increased deliveries.
